The Jubilee USA Network and the Africa Program of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) are hiring a local organizer, based in Miami, for a speaking tour in the Miami region from April 12 through 16, 2008.
JOB SUMMARY
The Jubilee USA Network & the Africa Program of AFSC’s Peace building Unit host an annual Peace and Justice Educational Tour aimed at bringing the voices of Africa, Asia and Latin America to the people of the United States. The theme for this years’ tour is Debt and Economic Migration. We are seeking a consultant to provide program and event planning, outreach and publicity, logistical support to the AFSC’s Peace building Unit & Jubilee’s National Organizer during the planning, implementation and reporting stages for the tour in Miami, FL on April 12 through 16, 2008.
Responsibilities
* Develop programming for the week of the tour that includes at least one major public event; workshops at colleges/universities, community groups and area churches; interviews with media; meetings with local elected officials, etc.
* Convene and lead a local tour organizing committee (of volunteers)
* Consultation with staff to develop a timeline for all contract work completion and participation in twice a month conference calls with staff and others working on the tour;
* Conduct outreach in the Miami area to locate schools, churches, community groups (including African, African American and Haitian community groups) and other organizations or leaders to host and co-sponsor tour events
* Work with the appropriate AFSC & Jubilee staff to devise and implement a media outreach strategy for the Miami area and promote tour activities to local media;
* Assist the tour coordinator in organizing a fund-raiser during the week of the tour;
* Provide a brief report to Jubilee & AFSC with an overview of demographics and politics in Miami;
* Be available to meet with staff during the site visit in January and be available full-time during the week of April 12- April 16th to serve as an assistant and guide on the tour;
* Promote the events locally for maximum turnout; recruiting volunteers to help with flyers, public announcements, posting for events calendars, etc.
* Produce a final project report by May 12, 2006.
Qualifications
* Excellent organizing and communication skills.
* Event planning and promoting skills.
* Knowledge of local Miami area; particularly of its immigrant communities, churches, media, universities etc.
* Strong Interest in economic and social justice – particularly debt or global poverty
* Some fundraising skills
* Demonstrated experience in working with faith communities helpful
* Demonstrated experience with organizing speaking tours preferable
Supervision: The consultant reports to Oni Richards, Tour Coordinator for the APJET.
Time Frame: The consultant will begin work on January 1, 2008 and will complete the task no later than May 12, 2008.
Payment: The consultant will be paid $15/hour for no more than 100 hours for the aforementioned services after the submission of an invoice which includes a report based on activities completed in accordance with the mutually agreed upon timeline and completion date.
Site: The consultant will work from home and will need access to a computer.
Reimbursement: AFSC will reimburse for personal phone, supplies, fax or postage charges directly related to this project, based on documentation submitted by the consultant.
AFSC does not withhold money for income tax or Social Security purposes from consultant fees. AFSC will file a 1099 form with the IRS, with a copy to the consultant, regarding fees paid. AFSC consultants do not receive health benefits or unemployment benefits.
This contract shall be terminated by AFSC at any time for “cause,” including but not limited to dishonesty, misappropriation of monies or other illegal conduct, continuous inattention to or negligence in the performance of duties assigned, willful disloyalty to the AFSC, or breach of any of the obligations of the Consultant contained in this contract. In any of the foregoing events, the AFSC shall be under no further obligation to the Consultant.
