Last Sunday, July 29, we welcomed the University Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) into our Jubilee Congregations program as we
celebrated their Jubilee Sunday with a beautiful service of worship and
celebration of community.
The University Christian Church, which celebrates their
centennial anniversary this year, is located in the Hillcrest/University
Heights area of
University Christian chose Ubuntu, or humanity, as their centering theme for this day. Ubuntu has its roots from the Nguni group of languages spoken in sub-Saharan Africa where the burdens of debt and extreme poverty are most severe.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu developed a theology centered on the
concept of Ubuntu — for the people, or “I am because we are.”
We can apply Ubuntu to our faith when we think of God’s
relationship with us through Jesus Christ. We are because Christ is. Our
true identity as humans comes through dependence on God and neighbor.
If our humanity is truly dependent on one another, then we
are called to support the efforts of right relationships among all
people. The global debt issue has striped many nations of their dignity
through extreme poverty. We can restore right relationships,
by restoring ubuntu, when we cancel debt in accordance with the Biblical
tradition of Jubilee.
Rev. Bill Harman, member of the Coordinating Committee of
the Jubilee USA Network and Jubilee San Diego, offered “Reflections
on Jubilee” as part of the sermon time. In addition to myself,
Patti Harman and Gail Winterbourne represented Jubilee San Diego.
After the worship service, the congregation gathered in Friendship Hall for petition signing in support of the Jubilee Act (HR 2634).
That's it!
