When I began my summer as the Media and Communications Associate for Jubilee USA Network, I did not realize how much I would learn. Through hands-on experiences, I saw how the nuts and bolts of a nonprofit organization work and saw firsthand how grassroots organizations really make a difference. I experienced life on Capitol Hill by attending press conferences and congressional briefings and was in the presence of some pretty influential people. Most importantly, I worked with a great team of enthusiastic people who really care about alleviating poverty around the world. We collaborated and worked together to fight for economic justice.
I recently graduated from University of Delaware where I studied international relations and international business. During my time at Jubilee, I had the opportunity to utilize my degree and expand my knowledge of debt relief and tax issues. Upon starting, I only knew the basic concepts behind tax havens and offshore profit shifting. I was never aware of the negative impact they have on low-income countries. I have always been passionate about human rights but by learning and working on Jubilee’s issues, I now realize how economic policies relate to human rights.
I was able to attend and listen in on many interesting meetings on various topics from tax reform to vulture funds. Through these meetings I experienced what it meant to be part of a coalition that works to create change as a collective whole. Even though many of the groups have different focus areas, they join together to make incredible change. I’ve learned so much over the past few months and I know I will take these new experiences and skills into my future endeavors. The work Jubilee USA does and the impact they have around the world is so inspiring and I’m incredibly grateful for this experience.
